Two leads, one dependency
Jason grew up around criminals, spent time in the Army, and later worked for drug runners in the Leonida Keys. He lives at one of Brian Heder's properties while doing local work for him.
Lucia learned to fight from her father and served time in Leonida Penitentiary. Rockstar describes her as wanting to build a better life for herself and her family.

Officially, the pair become caught in a criminal conspiracy across Leonida after an easy score goes wrong, and must rely on each other to survive it.
Rockstar characterises their relationship as potentially the best or worst thing to happen to Jason. That is a description of tone, not a spoiler about the ending — and no ending has been described.
What has not been said
Update (August 28, 2026): the Extended Look has since visibly demonstrated character switching between the two leads, so the original wording below no longer stands. Rockstar still has not explained switching rules, restrictions or availability.
